Guerrilla usability testing anyone?

What is Guerrilla Usability Testing?

Guerrilla usability testing is an informal method of evaluating a product, prototype, or design by approaching people in public spaces—like coffee shops, libraries, or co-working spaces—and asking them to interact with it. It’s called "guerrilla" because it's quick, low-cost, and often conducted on the go, without the need for a lab or specialized testing setup.

Why am I writing about this?

In my earlier days when I was working with my first product team — this is what I relied on. I feel I learnt the most at this job as there were no rules and I was just discovering UX Design and research. Infact — doing this type of research is what motivated me to go for my Master's in Design Strategy

Why Use Guerrilla Usability Testing?

✅ Fast and Easy Setup

You don’t need a formal research facility or a controlled environment. A laptop, tablet, or even a printed prototype is enough to start testing.

✅ Low-Cost & Accessible

There’s no need to recruit users through agencies or offer expensive incentives. A free coffee or a small token of appreciation often works!

✅ Immediate and Actionable Insights

Since testing is informal, you can quickly identify major usability issues and iterate on your designs right away.

Diverse User Feedback

Testing in public places exposes your product to a variety of users with different backgrounds, tech-savviness, and expectations.

When is Guerrilla Usability Testing Not Ideal?

While guerrilla testing is great for quick feedback, it has limitations:
❌ It’s not suitable for highly specialized user groups (e.g., medical professionals using complex software).
❌ Results may be biased based on the testing location and demographics.
❌ It doesn’t replace in-depth usability testing for critical user flows.

Final Thoughts

Guerrilla usability testing is an excellent way to validate design assumptions and uncover usability issues early. By incorporating it into your UX process, you can ensure that your product is intuitive, user-friendly, and aligned with real user needs—without spending a fortune on research.

So, grab your prototype, hit the nearest coffee shop, and start gathering valuable insights today! ☕📱
